Get to know Your Friend in Reykjavik! When you join us for a walking tour, you will meet your special friend in Reykjavik, but getting to know them a little bit beforehand could be fun.

Ólafur Sveinsson, or Óli as he‘s generally called, was born and raised on a horse ranch in North Iceland but moved to the capital around 20 years of age.

His interests are, among other things experiencing good food and drink and travel. He also loves meeting new people, which is perfect for being a guide for Your Friend in Reykjavik. He‘s a certified guide from MK.

Let’s Ask Your Friend in Reykjavik a Few Questions!

If you could choose only one thing from Iceland, what would it be? It‘s not really a thing, but a creature; the Icelandic horse.

If you want to learn more about the relationship between Icelanders and the Icelandic horse, check out our blog here.

Would you change anything about Iceland if you could? I would make the summers a tiny bit warmer.

What is your favorite place in Iceland? Glymur waterfall and the hike to it.

Glymur is the second-tallest waterfall in Iceland. It was the tallest, but Morsárfoss is now the tallest. It is in Vatnajökull National Park and became visible when Morsárjökull glacier, an outlet glacier of Vatnajökull glacier, started melting. Glymur is just under 200m tall, while Morsárfoss is about 230m tall.

What is your favorite traditional food? Leg of Lamb, roasted in the oven.

Check out our recipe for the dish if you want to make your own.

But what is your favourite national drink? I love our wide selection of local craft beer. My current favourite is a German-style beer called Bríó.

We recommend you check out our Reykjavik Beer & Booze tour when you visit our little island. You will be able to taste some of the best craft beers available.

What is the best thing about Reykjavik? How walkable the downtown area is.

But what is best about Iceland? The variety. You drive for half an hour, and you can experience something completely different.

What is your favorite Icelandic music? Skálmöld. I’m a Reykjavík Male Voice Choir member, and we’ve been fortunate enough to perform together with Skálmöld at Harpa concert hall on two occasions, 5 years apart.

What is your favourite clothing brand? Whatever keeps me warm and makes me look somewhat decent.

What is your favourite restaurant? The Grill Market.

The Grill Market is on a list of the Best Restaurants in Reykjavik

What Icelandic food is most often eaten at home? Smoked lamb as a bread topping, but boiled haddock or cod with boiled potatoes and rye bread with lots of butter as a meal.

What is your favourite candy? Any chocolate-coated licorice.
