Tour description

Krauma Geothermal Pools and Spa in Borgarfjörður, West Iceland, gets its water and power from Deildartunguhver, the most powerful hot spring in Europe. It is located 60 miles (97 kilometers) from Reykjavík.

Krauma is only a few meters north of the hot spring. The spa includes natural pools filled with clean and clear water from Deildartunguhver. The hot spring water is cooled to comfortable temperatures with water from Mountain Ok. This old volcano once had a glacier by the same name.

Krauma has six pools. Five of them are hot while one is cold. No disinfectant is added to the water, but its purity is ensured by very high water flow into the pools. The changing rooms have locked cupboards and a spacious dressing table with large mirrors and good lighting.

Krauma also has a restaurant that seats 70 people inside. There’s also an outdoor area. The kitchen emphasizes fresh ingredients from the local region.

Deildartunguhver in Reykholtsdalur Valley is the highest flow hot spring in Europe. The hot spring is a clear example of the energy that lives in the earth, but the bubbling hot spring spews about 180 liters of 100 ° C hot water per second. This natural resource has undoubtedly been used for washing and cooking for centuries, but 80 to 90 years ago, a 600-meter-long channel was built to transport steam to the old house in Deildartunga. The steam could heat the house, boil food in a hot tub, and residents could take a hot shower and sauna, which was considered a unique comfort at the time.  A 40 kW hydroelectric power plant has been built to utilize the hot spring to power the Spa and restaurant.
