The Westman Islands (Vestmannaeyjar) is an archipelago in the south of Iceland. The islands captivate with their history, volcanic landscapes, and beautiful wild nature. It is home to the world’s largest Atlantic puffin colony, so if you are a nature lover, don’t miss this fantastic place!
The tour departs from Reykjavik towards Landeyjahöfn port.
On this approximately 40-minute cruise to the Westman Islands, the views will be breathtaking, and you can spot the first puffins and, if you’re lucky, dolphins, so don’t hide inside the ferry for too long! There are toilets and a bar on board.
The main island, Heimaey, was almost destroyed by the Eldfell volcano in 1973. We will explore the lava fields of this eruption; there are only a few places in the world where you can experience such fresh volcanic terrains.
We will also go to the Eldheimar Museum to learn about this incredible moment in Iceland’s history. Sometimes we might swap this for another outdoor activity depending on the group and the weather. It will be discussed with a guide on the day.
Then it’s time for lunch at the Gott Restaurant. One main course is included, with vegan and vegetarian options available. The food in this cozy place is always fresh and insanely delicious.
You can head to the southern side of Heimaey to explore the cliffs and farms and go on a short walk in search of puffins. They only come to shore during summer to nest and breed in their cliffside burrows with their mates for life.
Or if you want to take your day to another level, you can join a 1 hour RIB boat ride with our partners from RIB Safari. The boat ride takes you deep inside sea caves and around the small islands scattered of Heimaey that are otherwise inaccessible. If you are lucky, you may even get close to the array of wildlife around the islands, like whales and puffins.
If you want to join the RIB Boat tour, please choose this as the optional extra at booking.
After a day full of attractions, we will be back in Reykjavik around 9 PM
The Volcanic Westman Islands Tour is an excellent small group tour where you can explore beautiful volcanic islands often overlooked by tourists. It is incomprehensible because it is one of the most charming places in Iceland, and you can spot a giant puffin colony there!
