Solar Eclipse Hike

This unique experience begins at the Service Center in Ísafjörður with a detailed trip briefing before setting sail at 9:00 AM. Enjoy a scenic boat journey through dramatic Westfjords scenery, gliding past steep fjords and towering sea cliffs on the way to the remote Aðalvík Bay. Here, you’ll catch sight of the haunting remains of Látrar, a once-thriving fishing village that now stands as a quiet reminder of Iceland’s coastal past.

From Aðalvík, the adventure continues on foot as you follow an old jeep track climbing steadily into the mountains. The ascent takes you through lush valleys, berry-covered hillsides, and small flowing streams, with ever-expanding views across the coastline. At the summit, you’ll explore the remains of a British WWII radar station, including former barracks, generator ruins, and an Oerlikon 20mm cannon turret once used to monitor enemy movements in Icelandic waters.

Standing at this elevated viewpoint, you’ll look out over dramatic 500-meter-high sea cliffs, where waves crash far below and seabirds such as Fulmars, Guillemots, Gulls, and Puffins soar effortlessly on the coastal winds. The route then follows a ridge trail, gradually descending toward the peaceful Teistuvatn Lake, a haven for Whooper Swans and Kittiwakes.

This tranquil lakeside setting provides a remarkable place to experience the solar eclipse. As the sky darkens and the light shifts over the surrounding wilderness, you’ll witness this rare celestial event in near-complete isolation, surrounded by untouched nature and silence.

The journey concludes at Slétta, a beautiful coastal area with a sandy beach and lighthouse, where your boat awaits. During the return cruise to Ísafjörður, keep watch for seals resting along the shore and, with some luck, whales surfacing in the fjord.
