Discover Iceland’s unique Rúgbrauð, or hot spring rye bread, baked underground using natural geothermal heat. On this short guided tour, watch as traditional bread is prepared from a family recipe, buried in the warm black sand, and slow-cooked for 24 hours. Guests can dig up a fresh loaf and sample it hot with Icelandic butter or smoked trout from Lake Laugarvatn. This delightful experience is perfectly paired with a relaxing visit to the geothermal baths and is a must-try on your Golden Circle journey.
There is a reason why it’s sometimes called Geyserbread, Hot Spring bread, or Lavabread. On this short tour, you will see firsthand how we bake the bread in the ground using a hot spring. The caretakers make the bread from an old recipe from a grandma of one of the owners, dig it into the warm hot spring black sand and then bake it for 24 hours.
This is a perfect stop on your Golden Circle tour. This tour is a scheduled walk, starting every day at 11:45 AM and 2:30 PM from the reception at Fontana Laugarvatn, and then it’s a short walk to the geothermal bakery.
You dig up a pot of fresh, delicious bread from the hot black sand. Finally, everyone is invited to sample the freshly baked bread after the informative walk and entertaining demonstration. Ideal in combination with geothermal bathing at Fontana Laugarvatn. Maybe before you take a dip into the hot water?
The slow cooking makes the dark rye bread very tasty and rememberable for everyone sampling it.
Guests are offered to taste the bread, served hot from the ground with Icelandic butter, and if you want, smoked trout from the lake Laugarvatn. This is something you should not miss!
