Tour description

Visit Landmannalaugar, a stunning destination in Iceland’s Highlands. Discover vibrant rhyolite mountains, bubbling hot springs, lava fields, and incredible hiking trails. Explore the beauty of Fjallabak Nature Reserve and admire breathtaking landscapes!

The lava fields and striking rhyolite mountains in our destination have been shaped by countless years of volcanic activity. Laugahraun was formed during a volcanic eruption in 1477. It is famous for its expansive black obsidian, known for its smooth, sharp edges and distinct appearance. This obsidian, also known as “Dragon Glass” in the TV series Game of Thrones, holds a special allure. The rhyolite mountains in the area are composed of quartz and silica, with the addition of iron and sulphur giving them vibrant colors. The Sulphur Wave, or Brennisteinsalda, showcases this beautifully.

During our visit, we will spend approximately 3 hours in Landmannalaugur. We offer a guided hike through the mesmerizing obsidian fields to Brennisteinsalda, which takes around 2 hours. However, you are also welcome to explore the area on your own during this time. You can choose a different trail or simply relax and extend your stay in the natural hot pool. Just remember to bring your swimwear and a towel!

Prepare to be awestruck by the natural beauty and extraordinary geology of this area. It promises an experience that will leave you with unforgettable memories.

ITINERARY:

Hjálparfoss

Hjálparfoss, or Help’s Fall, is a stunning waterfall with two tiers gracefully flowing into a large plunge pool. What sets this waterfall apart is its unique surroundings of basalt rock formations.

The area surrounding Hjálparfoss earned its name, Hjálp or “help,” due to its significance in aiding travelers. In the past, those journeying from the north to the south of Iceland would have to navigate the remote and challenging route of Sprengisandur. This barren desert route often made it difficult to find suitable grazing areas for horses. However, upon reaching the lush vicinity near Hjálparfoss, people saw it as a blessing, where their horses could finally graze after the arduous expedition.

Landmannalaugar

Our guide will lead you on a scenic hike up to Brennisteinsalda, where you’ll be surrounded by breathtaking nature. Keep an eye out for the possibility of spotting an elf! Along the way, you’ll encounter colorful rhyolite mountains and small hot springs emitting mystical steam. After about two hours, we’ll return to the huts, where you can unwind with a soothing soak in the natural pool.

Sigöldugljúfur – The Valley of Tears

This enchanting valley gets its name from the stunning waterfall that cascades down into a deep gorge. The water plunges from the edge of the cliffs, creating a mesmerizing sight and a misty atmosphere that seems almost melancholic. The tears of the fall lend an air of mystery and evoke a sense of awe among visitors.

Whether you are an avid hiker, a nature lover, or simply seeking solace in the beauty of untouched landscapes, Sigöldugljúfur is a destination that will leave a lasting impression. It is a place where nature’s tears transform into breathtaking beauty, reminding us of the power and majesty of the natural world.
