Laki Craters & Surroundings Helicopter Tour – Skaftafell

We’ll head west of Vatnajökull National Park, soaring over the expansive ice sheet of Skeiðarárjökull, one of the many outlet glaciers of Vatnajökull, Europe’s largest glacier. Our destination: the Lakagígar crater chain—a massive row of volcanic craters that stretch as far as the eye can see. We believe that flying over the Laki Craters is the best way to truly grasp their staggering scale.

These craters were formed during one of the largest volcanic eruptions in recorded history back in 1783, which caused widespread famine in Iceland and beyond. Today, we admire them as remarkable geographical wonders, cherished on our flightseeing tours for their awe-inspiring views. On our return journey, we’ll pass over the Súlutindar peaks—an intriguing formation sculpted by glaciers on the west side of Skeiðarárjökull. Continuing southeast along the edge of Skeiðarárjökull, you’ll enjoy a panoramic view of its immense size.
