Lake Mývatn, Waterfall & Volcanoes Tour from Akureyri

The meeting point for our tour is at the Cruise Terminal in Akureyri.

Goðafoss Waterfall

Our first stop will be at Goðafoss Waterfall. As we approach, you will hear the roar of the water as it cascades down into the river below. The waterfall is situated in a wide river, and the water falls from a height of about 12 meters.

Lake Mývatn Craters

The next attraction is a lake surrounded by stunning scenery, including the famed pseudo-craters of Skútustaðagígar, also known as rootless craters. The lava did not erupt from these craters, though they resemble true volcano craters. Rather these strange formations emerged during an ancient volcanic eruption when lava flowed in wetlands surrounding the lake leading to steam explosions, giving them their crater-like appearance. One can walk along the crater tops, covered in grass, and often serve as grazing land for sheep.

The Mývatn Lake, like these craters, was formed by a volcanic eruption about 2,300 years ago, and it is renowned for its rich birdlife, including various species of ducks and geese.

Dimmuborgir

Our next stop is the gothic lava formations at Dimmuborgir. Most lava fields in Iceland are relatively flat and covered in moss. But here, the lava formed into dramatic shapes and alluring structures, which make this one of the most well-known natural attractions in North Iceland. Created during the same eruption as the Skutustaðirgigur craters, follow the walking trails to explore this remarkable and captivating landscape.

Hverir – Námaskarð Geothermal Area

Then we will visit Hverir, where you can witness the power of geothermal activity up close. You will see steam vents, mud pots, and hot springs constantly bubbling and spitting out boiling water and mud. The landscape here is otherworldly, combining vibrant colors and unique geothermal features.
