Tour description

A one-way boat ride from Hornvík in Hornstrandir.

Hornvík is a cove on Hornstrandir that lies between Hælavíkurbjarg and Hornbjarg. Before, there were 3 towns, Horn (abandoned in 1946), Höfn (abandoned in 1944), and Rekavík behind Höfn (abandoned in 1944). To the east of the cove rises Hornbjarg and to the west Hælavíkurbjarg, but these cliffs, together with Látrabjrg, are the largest bird cliffs in Iceland. Between Hælavikurbjarg and Rekavíkur is Hvannadalur and Rekavíkurfjall. Up from Rekavík is Atlaskarð, around which a hiking trail leads to Hælavík and Hlöðuvík. Between Rekavík and Höfn is the mountain Darri with Einbúi. Tröllkambur goes out to Rekavík.

In the southern cove is Hafnarskarð, but there is a hiking trail to Veiðileysufjörður, Tindaskörð, Ranglaskarð, which leads to Lónafjörður, and Breiðaskarð at Snók. To the east are Kýrskarð, through which you can go to Látravík, Hestskarð, and Almenningaskarð, but there is also a hiking trail in Látravík.

North of Almenningaskarði Innstidalur and up from it are Harviðrisgjá, Eilífstindur and Kálfatindur. To the west of Kálfatinda is Miðdalur and up from it are Jörundur, Svaðaskarð and Miðfell. To the west of Miðfell is Ystidalur, and Horn runs from it.

At Höfn in Hornvík, there is now a service house for the ranger at Hornstrandir.

Why Your Friend in Reykjavik Recommends This Tour

Hornstrandir is one of the most beautiful places in Iceland. There are no roads and sporadic cell reception, so you might experience complete tranquillity without interruptions – apart from bird songs and the Arctic fox. You must be well prepared for the hike, but it is well worth it!
