The Meet Eyjafjallajökull Glacier tour is operated from October – June.
Do you remember the Icelandic volcano that erupted in 2010, severely disrupting European flight traffic and further afield? You might remember that its name is almost unpronounceable. Well, that´s Eyjafjallajökull (give it a try: “ei-ya-fyat-LA-yer-kitle”). It’s located basically in our backyard. We enjoy watching it from Midgard Base Camp.
Our Eyjafjallajökull winter tour has several options, depending on weather and snow conditions. In all options, we explore the area around the volcano Eyjafjallajökull (and its icecap and outlet glacier Gígjökull).
In one option, we cross the unbridged rivers on our way to Gígjökull, an outlet glacier of Eyjafjallajökull, where a flood from the eruption came down dramatically changing the landscape (an entire lake disappeared!).
If the conditions are right, we drive onto the glacier to get to the top crater. In good weather, the scenery from the top is spectacular, with a view over the island of Iceland, the surrounding glaciers, the black beaches and the Westmann Islands. As well as, of course, a look into the vast crater from which over 500 tonnes of ash per second were at one time being ejected!
Meet Eyjafjallajökull Glacier Tour is a fun and adventurous day tour!
