It is a unique experience to see the crater and the new lava covering 4.85 square kilometers. You can expect a 2-2.5-hour hike through the rugged and raw terrain on the Reykjanes Peninsula up to Gelgingadalir or Langihryggur. 3 to 4-mile moderate hike on rough terrain and slippery hillsides, which are sometimes steep. An elevation gain of 1000ft (330m).
