Iceland Southern Coast Tour Description

Our journey on the Viking Trail begins with us heading out of Reykjavik towards the agricultural towns of Selfoss and Hvolsvöllur. As we venture further south, the characteristic lowland vistas give way to more mountainous landscapes, and soon, the ice caps come into view.

Glaciers, farmlands, and volcanoes await your camera lens on one side while out to sea, the Westman Islands shimmer seductively on the horizon.

This area is known for its huge part in the Icelandic Sagas, featuring in the classic Njálssaga, The Story of Burnt Njáll. (If Iceland’s myths and legends intrigue you, please also check out our Reykjavik Folklore Tour).

We make a stop at the ever-popular Seljalandsfoss waterfall. If conditions allow, we take a walk behind the waterfall’s curtain before visiting its nearby cousin Gljúfrabúi, mysteriously hidden from view in the mountainside.

Then it’s back on the road to hunt down yet another of Iceland’s famous waterfalls; this time, it’s the impressive Skógafoss with its dramatic 60-meter fall.

We then head in the direction of one of the most visited towns in the country: Vík í Mýrdal. This charming coastal village is an excellent spot for taking photos. You’ll enjoy a fantastic view of the town and the coast beyond the church.

The Dramatic Landscapes of Iceland’s Southern Coast…

Having reached our most southerly point, we turn around and make our way back to the black sand beach of Reynisfjara, where we spend some time exploring and soaking up the atmosphere of these dramatic environs. The sight of the mighty North Atlantic as it crashes onto the black sands makes for a powerful and unforgettable image!

But we are not done yet! We journey back on the Viking Trail, taking the coast road and heading towards the Sólheimajökull glacier.

After having placed a foot upon the glacier, we return to Reykjavik. Back in Iceland’s capital city, you’ll be able to relax and reflect on the magnificent scenery the South Coast Sagas Tour provided.
