Get ready for an unforgettable adventure deep into Iceland’s rugged Highlands. Landmannalaugar, set in the Fjallabak Nature Reserve, is famed for its colorful rhyolite mountains, black lava fields, steaming geothermal pools, and dramatic volcanic scenery.
Traveling in a 4×4 Super Jeep, we’ll follow scenic backroads with the flexibility to stop for photos, short walks, and breathtaking viewpoints along the way. Shaped by centuries of eruptions, this area showcases a striking contrast of shiny black obsidian and vividly colored peaks. One highlight is the Laugahraun lava field, created in 1477, where obsidian — once called “Dragon Glass” — covers the ground. Brennisteinsalda, “The Sulphur Wave,” is another natural wonder, painted in bold hues by volcanic minerals.
We’ll spend over three hours in Landmannalaugar itself, with the option to join a guided two-hour hike across lava fields and rhyolite slopes. Or, if you prefer, enjoy a shorter stroll or relax in the natural geothermal pool — a soothing soak surrounded by raw wilderness. Don’t forget your swimsuit and towel!
This journey combines peaceful remoteness, thrilling mountain roads, and spectacular nature — offering a true taste of Iceland’s Highlands.
