Dynjandi Waterfall & Westfjords Heritage: Small Group Tour

We begin our tour in Ísafjörður and head toward Dynjandi. The drive takes us through dramatic Westfjords scenery and two unique tunnels, each with its own character. Dynjandi sits at the edge of Dynjandisvogur in Arnarfjörður, one of Iceland’s longest fjords. The area is famous in folklore for sea-monster tales and sweeping coastal views.

Dynjandi is often called the “Pearl of the Westfjords.” This series of seven waterfalls cascades over the cliff like a broad bridal veil. The river comes from Neðri Eyjavatn on the Gláma moors, which people once believed was a glacier. You can enjoy the accessible viewpoint at the base or take the more challenging path to the upper tier. Please wear sturdy shoes, as the trail can be slippery from the waterfall’s mist. Toilets are available near the parking area.

Next, we continue along the northern shore of Arnarfjörður to Hrafnseyri. This historic farmstead began as a Viking settlement and was once home to Hrafn Sveinbjarnason, a chieftain mentioned in the Sagas. It later became the birthplace of Jón Sigurðsson, the leader of Iceland’s independence movement. Iceland celebrates its National Day on his birthday, 17 June.

Hrafnseyri is a rewarding stop for visitors who enjoy culture and history. A small café sits inside traditional turf houses and serves homemade refreshments. The old school building now holds a museum about local archaeology and Jón Sigurðsson’s life. You can also visit the charming chapel and enjoy views across the fjord, where whales are often seen during summer.

Finally, we drive back to Ísafjörður through the fjords of Dýrafjörður, Önundarfjörður, and Skutulsfjörður. These areas are among the oldest in Iceland from a geological standpoint.
