A one-way boat ride from Hesteyri in Hornstrandir.
Hesteyri is a deserted village by Hesteyrarfjörður in Jökulfirðir on the northern side of the West Fjords. The village was abandoned just after the middle of the 20th century.
There are now 9 houses in Hesteyri that are used as summer houses. A store was run in a building called Búðin, but Hesteyri became a legal trading place in 1881. At its peak, more than 80 people lived in Hesteyri. There was a doctor’s residence there, but it was often difficult to get a doctor there.
Inside Hesteyri flows the Hesteyrará River, which often proved to be a barrier to those who went north to Kjaransvík, Hlöðuvík, and Hornvík.
You need to be well prepared before traveling on your own to Hornstrandir Nature Reserve.
Neither West Tours nor Sjóferðir are responsible for you while you are in the area.
You are your own responsibility.
Hornstrandir is one of the most beautiful places in Iceland. There are no roads and sporadic cell reception, so you might experience complete tranquillity without interruptions – apart from bird songs and the Arctic fox. You must be well prepared for the hike, but it is well worth it!
