A new fissure has opened at Fagradalsfjall at around 14.00 on August 3rd, 2022!
These afternoon and evening departures from Reykjavík take you directly to the Fagradalsfjall volcano in Geldingalur valley to witness the miracle of land forming before our eyes. Fagradalsfjall is currently erupting again after a period of inactivity.
The tour departs from Reykjavik at 11 AM or 6:30 PM.
This hike takes around 2 hours one way and is of moderate difficulty for a person of reasonable fitness. You will be there with an experienced guide who will tell you about the area’s geology and explain the formation of volcanoes. Please follow his instructions as you cannot enter some areas or come too close to the lava for safety reasons.
Please take comfortable hiking shoes, warm clothes, waterproof layers, snacks, and a water bottle.
The Peninsula of Reykjanes is a true volcanic wonder hosting unique natural phenomena; open rift zones, mossy-covered lava fields, geothermal fields, mountain lakes, fishing villages, and breathtaking coastal features. Reykjanes lies on one of the world’s major plate boundaries, the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, between the tectonic plates of Eurasia and North America, drifting apart from one another, resulting in open fissures and volcanic activity.
The volcanic eruption can be one of the most emotional experiences in your life.
It’s unbelievable, especially at night!
