What’s the best beer in Iceland?
It’s all a matter of taste, so choosing the best beers can be controversial at times. Still, the website Ratebeer has a pretty good list of the top Icelandic Beers worth noting. The top 2, Lava and Garún, I can absolutely agree with as they are both tasty and different. And because I like the flavour of Stout beers… Garún is actually my feel-good beer. A beer to drink slowly to enjoy the taste – and because it is pretty strong in alcohol.
Garún is named after the strong, brave heroine of Iceland’s most popular folktales, “The deacon of Dark River (Myrká).”. A tale of ghosts, undying love, and life triumphing over death. A story that also reflects elements essential to Iceland’s character: ice, snow, flooding rivers, whirling dark and mysterious creatures.
The same elements inspire this rich and bold Icelandic stout. Garún is as dark as the tale. It has an intense richness and haunting aroma with chocolate, liquorice, and coffee notes. It’s an 11.5% Imperial Stout made by Borg Brewery. On our Reykjavik Pub Crawl, you will get the chance to try out 10 different craft beers from Iceland.
If you would like to try out more beers, you can go around the island to check out all the craft breweries! There are quite many. But please, don’t drink and drive, have a designated driver!
